A former commercial Illustrator, William Spencer III - [b.1956] - made a permanent detour following his love of painting in the late 1980s.
Raised in the Midwest without Television Spencer has been fascinated with the idea that the air is filled with images, words and ideas which are not seen unless properly 'tuned in' to the right wavelength.
Artist Statement:
I like to think my work is something like these unseen wave-forms. I would compare this to a familiar tune where the words may not consciously be understood yet one still finds meaning or nostalgia.
I look for balance between the intentional and happy accidents.
- and love the dichotomy of soft lines alongside organic tendrils sharing space with more rigid humanly derived structure.
It is important the viewer sees clear evidence of obvious brush work yet hoping one wonders if portions were finished by artificial means.

In the work of William Spencer III, texture and patina appear like the undeniable effects of age as well as a symbol of a gradual acceptance of 'wear' during our lives. This is alongside Spencers barely visible poetry or various parts of numbers or letters. Sometimes his inclusions have root meanings from esoteria or quantum physics - other times they are just innocent passengers inserted like stow-aways.
It is best for me not to be preoccupied by the end result, Spencer stated, but rather to allow the painting to evolve on its own. Mostly he terms his work: unplanned. This may seem a contradiction for many who note the structured parts of Spencer paintings.
It is equally important to the artist that the most important part of the meaning arise as much from those who collect William Spencer paintings as from the artist's own subconscious.

William Spencer III's textural, narrative works often carry an air of mystery with them. Rich patina and underlying symbolic shapes are repeated in Spencer's works on eucalyptus hardboard. The artist works on a ground of polymer vinyl and lime compounds which is stained and then painted with acrylics. Sometimes areas of cellulose resin silk-screen images are hand screened by Spencer directly into the painting. William's own Poetry or journal notes are sometimes lightly written into the paint, like only partially spoken thoughts. Sometimes more of his poetry appears on the back of the painting. His work is a visual journal of subtle comments about life and his journey.
William Spencer III has had numerous one man shows as well as juried shows, including the Sausalito Art Festival and the Los Angeles Art Expo. Spencer was chosen for the Crocker Kingsley Exhibit, held in the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. This exhibit was juried by the curator of the Whitney Museum of Modern Art, and hosted by the oldest art club in the West. In 1992 William Spencer III had a one man show in Tokyo, Japan in the Roppongi district.
William Spencer III was voted as the 1992 Northern California Rising Star by 'On the Wings' Art Magazine. This annual juried event was hosted by Sacramento Area Galleries. He has also been featured in the Best of Sacramento issue of 'Sacramento Magazine' as well as 'Sun Storm' magazine of the Arts, and more recently in 'Diggs' web Magazine of Tucson, The 'Bisbee Marquee' web magazine of Bisbee AZ and 'Phoenix Home and Garden' Magazine.
